Vikram K Doraiswami Appointed as India's New Ambassador to China
New Appointment in Diplomatic Relations
New Delhi, March 19: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced that Vikram K Doraiswami, who is currently serving as the High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, will be the next Ambassador of India to the People's Republic of China.
Doraiswami, an officer from the 1992 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, is anticipated to assume his new role soon.
He took on the position of High Commissioner to the UK in August 2022, following his tenure as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
After completing his in-service training in New Delhi from 1992 to 1993, he was assigned to the Indian Commission in Hong Kong in May 1994 as a Third Secretary. During this time, he studied Chinese and earned an elective diploma in the language from the New Asia Yale-in-Asia language school at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In September 1996, he was posted to the Indian Embassy in Beijing, where he worked for nearly four years.
In 2002, Doraiswami served at the Prime Minister’s Office as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India. He later became the Political Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York in 2006.
In October 2009, he was appointed as India's Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa.
As per the MEA, Doraiswami returned to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi in July 2011, where he led the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) division until October 2012. He also coordinated the Fourth BRICS Summit held in New Delhi in March 2012.
A highly experienced diplomat, Doraiswami served as Joint Secretary of the Americas Division at the MEA from October 2012 to October 2014. He then became the Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan at the Indian Embassy in Tashkent before taking on the role of Ambassador to South Korea in April 2015.
Currently, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who has been with the Indian Foreign Service since 1990, is serving as India's Ambassador to China. Ambassador Rawat also studied Mandarin Chinese and has experience in Hong Kong and Beijing from 1992 to 1997.
He began his second term in Beijing in 2003 as Counsellor and concluded it in 2007 as Deputy Chief of Mission. Rawat was appointed as India's Ambassador to China in December 2021.
