Vijay's Upcoming Oath Ceremony

Actor-turned-politician Vijay is scheduled to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, May 9. The oath-taking ceremony is set to take place at 11 AM. On Friday, Vijay met with Governor R.V. Arlekar for the third time, presenting letters of support from 121 legislators to claim the formation of a government.

The leftist parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India, which are part of the DMK-led coalition in Tamil Nadu, stated that their decision to support Vijay was made to prevent the BJP from gaining a foothold in the state.

Support from Leftist Parties

Despite their support, the left parties have decided not to join Vijay's cabinet, maintaining their stance on state rights. After extensive discussions, both CPI and CPI(M) announced their backing for Vijay's party. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, Vijay's Tamilga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK) holds 108 seats, which is ten short of a majority.

Following the assembly elections, where TVK emerged as the largest party, they reached out to DMK's allied parties, including CPI, CPI(M), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), seeking their support to form the government.

Legislative Dynamics

Each of the left parties has two legislators. Initially, the CPI informed the Tamil Nadu Governor about their decision to support TVK, followed shortly by CPI(M), bringing Vijay's party closer to a simple majority. The left parties communicated their support for TVK in a letter addressed to the Governor. The Congress party, with five legislators, has already pledged its support to TVK.

In the assembly elections, TVK won 108 seats, making it the largest party. According to election commission rules, Vijay must vacate one of the two seats he won. He will need to relinquish one of his seats from Perambur in Chennai or Tiruchirappalli East. If he does so, the total number of TVK and supporting legislators will rise to 116. Consequently, Vijay will require the backing of two more legislators to establish his first government, with VCK expected to announce its position on Saturday, likely following the leftist parties.
