Vietnamese President's Historic Visit to India: Strengthening Ties

The President of Vietnam, To Lam, has embarked on a significant three-day diplomatic visit to India, aimed at enhancing the relationship between the two nations. His journey commenced in Gaya, Bihar, where he received a warm welcome from Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary. The Chief Minister expressed that this historic visit would elevate the longstanding ties between India and Vietnam to new heights.

During his stay, President To Lam also visited Bodh Gaya, the sacred site where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. He offered prayers at the Mahabodhi Temple, immersing himself in the spiritual ambiance. This visit symbolizes not only diplomatic engagement but also cultural and spiritual connections. Notably, in 2011, he planted a Bodhi tree at the Phat Tich Pagoda in Bac Ninh, which was brought from Bodh Gaya.

President To Lam, who is also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, is visiting India for the first time since his election. His trip will last until May 7, with an official welcome scheduled at the Presidential Palace on May 6. Following this, he will engage in extensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, covering bilateral relations as well as regional and global issues. President Droupadi Murmu is also expected to meet him, along with several senior leaders. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this visit is anticipated to open new avenues for cooperation between the two countries and provide fresh momentum to their relationship.

The relationship between India and Vietnam has historically been strong, rooted in civilizational ties. A comprehensive strategic partnership was established in 2016, marking its tenth anniversary this year. President To Lam's visit holds special significance on this occasion. Prime Minister Modi recently congratulated him on his election, expressing confidence that their friendship would strengthen under his leadership.

Defense collaboration between India and Vietnam is also rapidly strengthening, forming a crucial foundation for their strategic relationship. Both nations advocate for peace and stability in the South China Sea and are continuously enhancing partnerships in maritime security, naval cooperation, and military training. India is providing Vietnam with defense equipment, training, and technical assistance. Economically, the relationship between India and Vietnam is evolving swiftly. Trade between the two countries has surged from approximately $5.4 billion in 2016 to an expected $16.46 billion by 2025. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, trade reached $4.8 billion, marking a 28% increase compared to the previous year. Vietnam primarily exports electronic goods, machinery, and agricultural products to India, while India sends textiles, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and steel to Vietnam. This interdependence is fostering a collaborative environment that encourages integration of production chains beyond mere competition.

As global companies expand their production bases, both India and Vietnam are poised to play significant roles in regional supply chains. Investment collaboration is also on the rise, with Indian companies operating projects in over twenty provinces and cities in Vietnam, while Vietnamese firms are increasing their investments in India. New opportunities for cooperation are emerging, particularly in sectors like textiles and footwear, along with strengthening partnerships in digital technology, energy, and manufacturing.
