VDA Takes Action Against Illegal Hotels in Varanasi
VDA's Major Action
In a significant move, the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) has taken strict measures against hotels operating without approved building plans in a residential colony of Varanasi district. A total of 13 hotels have been sealed due to their construction without the necessary approvals. These establishments were found to be operating without proper parking facilities, causing disruptions for local residents and affecting traffic management.
Complaints from Local Residents
Residents of the Buddha Vihar colony in the cantonment area had lodged complaints with the VDA regarding these illegal hotels. They reported that the operation of these hotels was causing significant inconvenience, including persistent traffic jams, illegal parking, noise pollution, excessive movement of outsiders, security concerns, and additional pressure on public amenities.
Sealing of 13 Hotels
Upon investigating the complaints, the VDA confirmed their validity. It was also discovered that the hotel operators had submitted fraudulent documents to obtain licenses under sections 4/5 of the Sarai Act. Taking the complaints seriously, the VDA proceeded with the necessary actions and sealed the 13 hotels. The owners have been instructed to obtain building plans in accordance with the Uttar Pradesh Building Construction and Development Act 2025 and current standards.
List of Sealed Hotels
On Monday, the local enforcement team sealed several hotels, including Hotel Kiran Palace, Hotel Azure, Hotel Four Leaf, Hotel Zedic Roots, Stay Inn Kashvi, a new hotel being constructed by Trust on the ground floor, Hotel Rio Banaras, Hotel Zion Inn, Hotel Park Plaza, Hotel Silk City, Hotel Holiday Inn, Hotel Square Inn, and Comfort Inn Banaras. The VDA has informed hotel owners that the map approval process has been simplified and expedited, with approvals being granted within seven days for eligible cases.
Public Advisory
The VDA has urged the public to ensure that any construction or commercial use is approved according to regulations, or else strict actions will be taken.
