The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is shifting as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has announced its unconditional support for the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). This decision comes as actor-turned-politician Vijay prepares to meet with the Governor, solidifying TVK's position in the assembly. With the backing of VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), TVK's strength has risen to 120 seats, surpassing the majority threshold. This article delves into the implications of these political maneuvers and the potential for Vijay to become the Chief Minister.

VCK's Unconditional Support to TVK

In Tamil Nadu, the uncertainty surrounding the formation of a new government has been resolved as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) announced its unconditional support for the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) on Saturday. Actor-turned-politician Vijay is expected to meet with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar soon.

Shortly after VCK's decision to back Vijay, another ally of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), also pledged support to TVK. The IUML has two legislators.

With the backing of VCK and IUML, TVK's strength has increased to 120, surpassing the simple majority requirement of 118 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Eliminating the speculation and uncertainty regarding the new government formation, TVK leader Adhav Arjun confirmed to reporters that VCK has extended its support.

VCK's senior leader Vanni Arasu, who also leads the party's legislative group, formally announced the support for TVK in a letter addressed to the Governor. Arjun expressed gratitude to Congress, left parties, and VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan for their backing, expressing confidence that Vijay would become the Chief Minister.

According to VCK sources, the party will provide external support to TVK for the time being. Following VCK's decision, IUML also assured its support to TVK.

Emerging as the largest party in the assembly elections, TVK, led by Vijay, initially fell short of the majority by 10 seats, securing 108 seats. After winning in its first assembly elections, TVK reached out to DMK's allied parties—Congress, CPI, CPM, and VCK—for support in forming the government.

Vijay won two seats in the elections held on April 23, but he will have to vacate one, reducing the number of party legislators to 107. The parties supporting TVK include five from Congress and two each from CPI, CPM, VCK, and IUML, totaling 13 legislators.
