Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Bench Warmer Status Raises Eyebrows in T20I Series Against West Indies
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Remains Unused in T20I Series
The young Indian batting talent, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has yet to step onto the field during the current five-match T20I series against the West Indies. With three matches already played, the Indian team, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, holds a 2-1 advantage as they prepare for the fourth T20I at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on October 14.
Prior to this series, the 15-year-old prodigy was instrumental in helping Team India secure the gold medal at the Asian Games, where they triumphed over Pakistan in the final. Sooryavanshi contributed scores of 38 and 15 in the semifinal and final, respectively, making history as the youngest Indian to win an Asian Games gold medal.
Management's Selection Choices Under Scrutiny
Despite his impressive track record, Sooryavanshi has not yet been given a chance to play in the ongoing T20I series, as the management has opted to stick with the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. This decision has led former Indian captain and 1983 World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth to question the team's selection strategy.

Concerns Over Sooryavanshi's Development
Since making his international debut in a T20I series against England in July, where he became the youngest player to represent India at just 15 years and 99 days, Sooryavanshi's opportunities have been inconsistent. Despite a standout performance in a T20I series against Zimbabwe, he has struggled to secure a permanent position in the playing XI.
On his YouTube channel, Kris Srikkanth criticized the management, stating that the frequent changes made by head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee have negatively impacted Sooryavanshi's confidence and momentum.
"They have not only spoiled Sanju Samson's confidence, but India have also totally spoiled Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's confidence. He could have been given three matches against a team like the West Indies," remarked the former BCCI chief selector.
"Now that they've seen Abhishek Sharma for so long, he can be rested, and Sooryavanshi and Samson can open in the next match," he suggested.
Sooryavanshi's Impressive Performance in Previous Series
In his previous T20I series against Zimbabwe, Sooryavanshi scored a remarkable 151 runs over three matches, including a rapid 19-ball fifty and an 81-run innings, establishing himself as one of India's most promising young talents.
However, despite his stellar performance, the 15-year-old has found himself sidelined in the current series against the West Indies, as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma continue to dominate the top order.
Srikkanth Questions Samson's Consistency
Kris Srikkanth has also raised concerns regarding Sanju Samson's fluctuating form, noting that while he occasionally delivers match-winning performances, his overall consistency remains questionable.
"Samson has always been up and down. His consistency has always been questionable. He'll suddenly do wonders like the World Cup and then suddenly fail a lot," Srikkanth commented.
"Someone like Abhishek Sharma never has such extremes. Now, again, Samson will score in the next match," he added.
Samson's Performance in the Series
Throughout the ongoing T20I series, Sanju Samson's scores have been 11, 82, and 3, reflecting a roller-coaster performance that has sparked intense discussions about selection.
It remains uncertain whether the management will resolve the selection issues and provide Sooryavanshi with a much-deserved opportunity before the series wraps up in Bengaluru.
