Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Remarkable Day 1 at Duleep Trophy Final

On September 6, during the Duleep Trophy Final at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, 15-year-old batting prodigy and East Zone vice-captain Vaibhav Sooryavanshi captured attention with his impressive performance and a touching gesture towards fans. East Zone, after choosing to bat first, concluded Day 1 with a score of 385 for 4 in 79 overs, thanks to significant contributions from Ishan Kishan (111) and Kumar Kushagra (63). Other notable performances included Abhimanyu Easwaran (72), Shikhar Mohan (85), and Sooryavanshi, who scored 44 runs.


Sooryavanshi has become a prominent figure in the domestic cricket scene, known for his aggressive batting style. In his 37-ball innings, he confidently faced renowned fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, hitting him for two boundaries and a six, thereby applying early pressure on the bowling side.

The Duleep Trophy Final attracted a large crowd, with over 10,000 fans eager to witness the young talent. After his dismissal, many fans lingered to catch a glimpse of Sooryavanshi. A viral video on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), showcased fans extending jerseys, caps, and notepads for the young star to sign. Accompanied by security personnel, Sooryavanshi made his way to the boundary to meet his admirers.

This Duleep Trophy marks Sooryavanshi's first appearance in the tournament, where he serves as vice-captain under Ishan Kishan. His selection raised eyebrows due to the presence of seasoned players like Mohammad Shami and Abhimanyu Easwaran. The East Zone selection committee aims to develop Sooryavanshi for future leadership roles in both domestic and international cricket.


Despite a rocky start in the quarterfinal against Northeast Zone, where he scored only 8 runs, Sooryavanshi rebounded strongly in the semifinal against Central Zone, scoring 92 and 44 in his two innings. In the final, he showcased his attacking style with a quick 44 off 37 balls, reflecting his growing confidence.


Throughout the Duleep Trophy, Sooryavanshi has accumulated 184 runs, including a half-century, with an average of 46.00 and a strike rate of 110.17 across four innings. Following this tournament, he is set to join the Indian squad for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan, starting September 13.
