Uttarakhand's Initiative for Sanskrit Language
The government of Uttarakhand is set to create a Sanskrit Commission aimed at preserving and enhancing the use of the Sanskrit language within the state. To gather insights, the government has requested suggestions via email from Sanskrit scholars, educators, researchers, universities, gurukuls, and enthusiasts across the country by August 10. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the significant role of Sanskrit in Uttarakhand's heritage. He highlighted the necessity of making this ancient language relevant in contemporary times. Dhami stated that Sanskrit is not merely a language but the foundation of India's knowledge tradition and cultural heritage. The state government is actively working to make it accessible to the public and to give it a modern identity.
Sanskrit Education Secretary Deepak Kumar noted that Uttarakhand took a significant step in 2010 by granting Sanskrit the status of a second official language. He mentioned that Dhami had stressed the need for the Sanskrit Commission during an international Sanskrit conference scheduled for December 2025 in Haridwar. The process of establishing the commission was advanced in a meeting held on July 15. Officials indicated that the commission aims to focus on Sanskrit education and research, preserving ancient manuscripts, digitizing them, and promoting Indian knowledge traditions along with Vedic and classical studies. It will also emphasize skill development and employment opportunities related to Sanskrit. The panel's goal is to enhance the use of Sanskrit in administrative and technical fields while exploring its potential in artificial intelligence and digital media. The commission will formulate policies and action plans to promote and disseminate Sanskrit both within Uttarakhand and beyond.
