Voter List Draft Published

On October 27, following the third postponement of the special intensive revision (SIR) process across 12 states and union territories, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the draft of the voter list for Uttar Pradesh. The draft was made public on Tuesday as part of the ongoing SIR process, revealing that over 2.8 million voters have been removed from the state's voter list.

Timeline for Voter List Updates

Originally scheduled for publication on December 31, the draft of the voter list has now been released. The Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, Navdeep Rinwa, previously indicated that the period for receiving claims and objections would run from January 6 to February 6, 2026. Decisions regarding these claims and objections will be made during the notice phase from January 6 to February 27, 2026. The final publication of the voter list is set for March 6, 2026, with all necessary forms already collected and digitized.

Reasons for Delay

The Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh requested a two-week extension to complete the process, allowing district electoral officers to re-verify lists of deceased, relocated, or absent voters. The state had already received a one-week extension. So far, the special intensive revision (SIR) has been completed in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

What to Do If Your Name Is Missing?

Last month, the Chief Election Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, Rinwa, informed a news agency that voters who are untraceable or missing, and whose names have been removed from the voter list, must provide proof of inclusion in the 2003 SIR list or any document specified by the Election Commission to have their names added back. He also mentioned that the commission would invite objections to the draft voter list, which includes approximately 125.5 million names. Objections can be submitted using Form 7, and if a valid objection is found against a name in the draft list, it may be removed. These forms can be submitted online at voters.eci.gov.in or through the ECINET app, with offline options available through booth-level officers (BLOs).
