Uttar Pradesh Politics: BJP Faces Growing Challenges Ahead of 2027 Elections
Changing Dynamics in UP Politics
The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is becoming increasingly complex as the 2027 assembly elections approach. On one hand, there is a visible discontent among the upper caste voters, while on the other, concerns are rising about potential fractures in the OBC vote bank. The shifting caste equations are making the path to power more challenging for the BJP than ever before.
Internal Struggles and New Regulations
According to reports, the BJP is grappling with a complicated situation as it faces growing dissatisfaction from its traditional upper caste support base while also worrying about possible erosion of its OBC vote bank. Additionally, internal factionalism and discomfort regarding the recent UGC regulations have added to the party's challenges.
The UGC's 2026 regulations aimed at promoting equality in higher education are intended to curb caste-based discrimination. However, several organizations from the upper caste community have criticized these rules, claiming they could be misused to discriminate against them. Some BJP leaders have openly opposed these regulations, although they are currently on hold due to Supreme Court intervention.
Discontent Within the Party
These regulations have highlighted the discontent among Brahmin leaders within the party, who have long been concerned about the BJP's increasing focus on OBCs. This has also heightened tensions between the Brahmin and Thakur communities, a rift that was evident even before the last Lok Sabha elections. Such dynamics could pose a significant challenge to the BJP's strategy of 'Hindu unity.'
Impact on Lok Sabha Elections
Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and its leader Akhilesh Yadav are actively working to strengthen their hold on the OBC community. The SP is moving beyond the traditional Yadav-Muslim alliance to forge a broader coalition known as the PDA (Backward, Dalit, and Minority) alliance. This strategy bore fruit in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the SP secured 37 seats while the BJP managed only 33.
Akhilesh Yadav's Political Strategy
On March 29, Akhilesh Yadav is set to address the 'Samajwadi Samta Bhaiyachara Rally' in Dadri, a location where he launched his 2012 election campaign that led to the SP winning 224 out of 403 seats. This time, he is focusing on garnering support from Gurjar, Kurmi, Saini, and Kushwaha voters in western, central, and eastern UP.
Akhilesh has accused the BJP government of abolishing the 27% reservation for OBCs and failing to fill thousands of vacant positions for the PDA community. Some BJP leaders fear that the UGC controversy could provide the SP with an opportunity to strengthen its allegations.
Brahmin Discontent with BJP
Many upper caste MPs from the BJP have expressed that the UGC regulations have undermined their community's trust. In several districts, party officials have resigned, labeling these regulations as 'black laws.' Brahmin leaders have complained about objections raised against their community meetings, while no such issues have been raised regarding meetings of Thakur and OBC legislators.
One Brahmin leader compared this situation to the Congress's handling of the 'Shah Bano case,' suggesting that just as that decision altered the political landscape, this issue could also have significant repercussions.
Declining Support for BJP
Statistics indicate a steady decline in the BJP's seat count in UP. The party won 71 Lok Sabha seats in 2014, which dropped to 62 in 2019 and further declined to 33 in 2024. In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP secured 312 out of 403 seats, but this number fell to 255 in 2022. Reports suggest that between 2019 and 2024, support from non-Yadav, non-Kurmi OBCs and non-Jatav Dalit communities for the BJP has also diminished, with the average margin of victory decreasing.
Following the poor performance in 2024, internal strife was cited as a reason for the decline. It was noted that the Brahmin community is dissatisfied with the Yogi Adityanath government, and there have been reports of discontent regarding candidate selection among the Thakur community, particularly in western UP. Amid these circumstances, the BJP faces a significant challenge in balancing its traditional upper caste base with OBC support.
