Uttar Pradesh Minister Calls for Clarity Amid Cough Syrup Controversy
Concerns Raised Over Opposition's Role
In light of the cough syrup controversy involving codeine, Sanjay Nishad, the Cabinet Minister for Fisheries in Uttar Pradesh, expressed his concerns regarding the opposition's stance on Saturday. He urged Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), to refrain from politicizing the issue and instead provide clarity.
Nishad stated that under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's leadership, the state government is firmly committed to combating the illegal trade of narcotics and organized crime. However, he finds the opposition's involvement in this matter to be highly troubling.
He accused the opposition of evading the truth by hiding behind caste politics instead of cooperating in the investigation of this serious issue. Nishad highlighted that the emergence of photographs linking Akhilesh Yadav with individuals associated with the codeine cough syrup syndicate is not a trivial matter.
He further emphasized that the silence from Yadav regarding this issue is perplexing, and he should provide an explanation. Nishad pointed out that the deaths of children in Tamil Nadu linked to the codeine cough syrup raise serious questions about Yadav's role and his silence on the matter.
The minister clarified, “This is not a political issue; it concerns the future of our youth and upcoming generations. The opposition should assist in the investigation rather than engage in politics. Our government's position is clear: no matter how powerful the political protection of any mafia may be, the law will prevail.”
