Massive Tree Planting Campaign in Varanasi Division

Under the 2025 tree planting initiative, the Varanasi division, which includes the districts of Varanasi, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, and Chandauli, has successfully planted over 1.81 crore saplings, surpassing its target of 1.80 crore. This extensive campaign aims to increase the forest cover in Uttar Pradesh from the current 25% to a target of 33%.

The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Thursday that it has set a new record by planting over 37.21 crore saplings under the slogan "One Tree in the Name of Mother 2.0." According to a statement from the state government, Uttar Pradesh is rapidly transitioning from a 'heat wave' to a 'green wave.' This year, the tree planting campaign has achieved a remarkable milestone with the planting of over 37.21 crore trees.

According to the statement, more than 240 crore saplings have been planted in Uttar Pradesh over the past eight years as part of the ongoing tree planting campaign. Residents of Varanasi participated in a significant tree planting event organized by the state government. A large program was held on Wednesday at the STP campus in Ramna, where Uttar Pradesh Minister Ravindra Jaiswal, District Panchayat President Poonam Maurya, and MLC Dharmendra Singh planted Peepal, Banyan, and Neem trees. This event marked the launch of a statewide initiative to plant 37 crore saplings.

Additionally, the survival rate of saplings planted from 2021-22 to 2024-25, as reported by the Forest Department, stands at approximately 86.67%. This initiative has also led to a significant increase in green cover and 'forest carbon stock' in the state, surpassing the national average. According to the monitoring branch of the Forest Department, the survival rates recorded were 76.87% in 2021-22, 83.73% in 2022-23, 90.04% in 2023-24, and 96.06% in 2024-25.
