US Vice President Proposes Key Conditions for Iran Peace Agreement
Framework for Peace Between the US and Iran
In a recent interview, US Vice President JD Vance articulated three fundamental principles that could form the basis of a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran. He emphasized that any future deal would depend on Iran fulfilling specific security and political requirements. Vance explained that the framework is built on three main tenets: preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains accessible for international shipping, and providing economic incentives to Iran contingent upon a significant change in its conduct.
“The agreement is straightforward. First, Iran must not possess a nuclear weapon. Second, the Straits of Hormuz must remain open. Lastly, there are various benefits that Iran could receive if it alters its behavior,” Vance stated.
Economic Benefits Tied to Policy Changes
Vance further clarified that any economic advantages for Iran would be contingent upon the nation ceasing its support for groups that the US designates as terrorist organizations and halting its nuclear program development. “If they stop promoting terrorism, if they cease funding terrorist activities, and if they abandon their nuclear ambitions, they could indeed receive substantial benefits. If they continue their current actions, they will receive nothing,” he remarked.
He also countered Iranian claims that misrepresent the proposal, asserting that Tehran would only gain the promised benefits if it undergoes a significant transformation in its policies. “Iranian propagandists are suggesting they will receive all these benefits without mentioning that these are contingent upon a fundamental change in their national behavior,” Vance added.
US Stance on Iran's Choices
Vance noted that the United States stands to benefit regardless of Iran's decisions. “As the President has indicated, the US wins either way. If Iran chooses not to comply, we will dismantle their nuclear program, and the Straits of Hormuz will remain open. Alternatively, if they choose to transform, that is also a significant victory for us. The choice is theirs,” he stated.
As discussions progress towards a potential peace agreement in Switzerland later this week, former President Trump shared on Truth Social that this “Great Deal” aims to foster “Peace and Security” across the region. He remarked, “This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region. Many presidents have attempted to negotiate peace with Iran, and all have failed before me. For the first time, regional leaders have found a President capable of helping them achieve genuine Peace. With the Strait opening upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, oil will flow freely again for the Region and the World!”
