US Secretary of State's Remarks on Strait of Hormuz

On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz accessible, stating it must remain open 'one way or the other.' His comments followed recent US military actions against Iran. Speaking to reporters on his flight to Jaipur, India, Rubio emphasized the importance of the strait's accessibility.

Rubio also indicated that discussions regarding a potential agreement with Iran might take several days. His statements were made in the context of the Quad foreign ministers' meeting taking place in New Delhi, where rising tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict with Iran have heightened concerns about global security, energy resources, and economic stability.

The Quad meeting includes India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, known as the Quad, comprises India, the United States, Australia, and Japan, focusing on promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

During the discussions, the four nations are expected to explore enhanced collaboration in critical areas such as technology, regional security, and essential minerals. India is currently chairing the Quad, hosting this significant meeting.

Rubio Discusses Trump Administration's Commitment to Quad

In response to inquiries about the Trump administration's dedication to the Quad, Rubio highlighted that the current iteration of the Quad was initiated during President Trump's first term and has since evolved. He noted the increasing significance of the Indo-Pacific region for trade, energy, and maritime activities in the coming years.

Rubio remarked on the potential for a substantial increase in energy trade between India and the US, as well as with other nations in the Americas, predicting growth in trade and maritime operations. He expressed confidence that the Quad partnership would continue to strengthen over time.

Looking ahead, Rubio stated, 'The work on Quad goes on. In two days, we will be on the podium discussing the Quad, and I assure you, we will have a compelling narrative to share.'
