During his visit to India, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the situation in Iran. The conversation was initiated at the request of Lavrov, as confirmed by Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson for the US Department of State. Pigott stated, "The parties exchanged views on the Russia-Ukraine war, bilateral relations, and the situation in Iran," in a statement released on Monday.

In a related statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that Lavrov informed Rubio about Russia's decision to target military-related sites in Kyiv. Lavrov described these actions as "systematic and consistent strikes" in retaliation for what he termed the Kyiv regime's terrorist attacks on peaceful civilians and civilian infrastructure within Russian territory.

Furthermore, Lavrov urged Rubio to take note of the Russian Foreign Ministry's recommendation for the US and other nations with diplomatic missions in Kyiv to facilitate the evacuation of their diplomatic staff and citizens from the Ukrainian capital.

Rubio's four-day trip to India aims to recalibrate the bilateral relations that have faced challenges since last year due to significant tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to participate in the Quad foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi, alongside Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar leading the discussions.

The Quad, which includes India, the US, Australia, and Japan, has become a pivotal alliance focused on promoting peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. India is currently hosting the meeting as the coalition's chair.
