US Secretary of State Confirms Mojtaba Khamenei's Activity Amid Nuclear Negotiations

In a recent Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is alive and becoming more active in decision-making. This comes after reports of Khamenei's injuries during US-Israeli airstrikes. Rubio also highlighted Iran's newfound willingness to negotiate aspects of its nuclear program, marking a significant shift in discussions that have historically been contentious. The implications of these developments could reshape US-Iran relations and the broader geopolitical landscape.

Mojtaba Khamenei's Status and US Intelligence Insights

Washington DC: On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, asserting that Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is indeed alive and becoming more involved in decision-making. This statement follows reports of Khamenei sustaining injuries during US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran on February 28. Rubio noted, "There are signs that he is increasingly engaging at some level." Previously, US intelligence suggested that Khamenei was living in isolation with minimal contact with the outside world, as reported by officials familiar with the situation.

According to the report, the internal communication issues within Iran's leadership have complicated negotiations with the US and have led to delays in discussions regarding a potential agreement between Washington and Tehran. The February 28 strikes also resulted in the death of Mojtaba's father, Ali Khamenei, who had ruled Iran for nearly 37 years. Since the offensive, Mojtaba has not made any public appearances, although he has issued threats against the US through Iranian media.

Iran's Nuclear Negotiations

Marco Rubio on Iran's Willingness to Negotiate: Rubio further informed the Senate committee that Iran has shown a willingness to discuss elements of its nuclear program. He stated, "For the first time, they have agreed to negotiate aspects of their nuclear program that just a month ago, they were unwilling to even acknowledge, let alone discuss." He emphasized that US forces have dismantled the conventional defenses Iran was using to advance its nuclear ambitions.

Rubio elaborated that Iran's intention to develop nuclear weapons was being concealed behind a conventional military shield, which included an extensive arsenal of missiles, drones, and naval capabilities. He remarked, "At that point, there would be nothing you could do about it." This statement is significant as Tehran has historically dismissed US proposals for negotiations on sensitive aspects of its nuclear program.
