US Plans Increased Military Presence in Israel Amid Iran Tensions
US Military Strategy Shift
New Delhi: The United States is set to send additional aerial refueling aircraft to Israel as President Trump contemplates a significant escalation of military actions against Iran, according to a report from a news outlet. This decision follows a review of various military strategies during a Situation Room meeting on Tuesday, with officials indicating that the proposed actions could extend beyond the current US operations in the Strait of Hormuz, potentially targeting critical infrastructure and nuclear facilities within Iran.
Reviewing Military Options Against Iran
As per the report, the White House is considering strikes on Iranian power plants, underground nuclear sites, and other strategic infrastructures to further undermine Tehran's nuclear ambitions. One of the potential targets is Pickaxe Mountain, an underground facility suspected of housing sensitive nuclear-related operations. The aim is to complicate Iran's access to enriched uranium while increasing pressure on Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and engage in nuclear negotiations.
Increased Military Build-Up in Israel
The anticipated escalation is expected to be supported by a substantial military buildup in Israel. Currently, around 30 aerial refueling aircraft are stationed at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, with a similar number at Ramon Airport in southern Israel. Israeli officials have indicated that the US plans to deploy several dozen more aircraft, restoring the fleet to its original size at the onset of the conflict. These refueling aircraft are essential for long-range missions, enabling fighter jets and bombers to operate over extended periods and strike deep into Iran without needing to return to base.
Ongoing US Strikes Near Strait of Hormuz
These military preparations coincide with ongoing US strikes against Iranian-linked targets, which have now entered their seventh consecutive day. Reports indicate that US forces have bombed at least seven bridges around Bandar Abbas, a crucial port city utilized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for transporting ammunition and supplies across the Strait of Hormuz. Disrupting these logistics routes is believed to weaken Iran's operational capabilities in this strategically vital waterway.
Iran's Escalating Threats
As tensions rise, Iran has intensified its attacks on US military installations throughout the Middle East, targeting bases in Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, and Kuwait. The IRGC has also claimed responsibility for an attack on a former US base in Syria, although American troops had previously withdrawn from that location. Iran has asserted that its missile and drone strikes have destroyed several US refueling aircraft and fighter jets stationed in Jordan, although these claims remain unverified.
Warnings from Iran's Revolutionary Guard
The IRGC has issued new warnings to the United States, stating that American military movements in the region are being closely monitored. They cautioned that US naval forces are nearing the 'zero hour' of an Iranian operation. Despite the escalating rhetoric, Iranian forces have not yet launched direct attacks on Israel, likely due to concerns about provoking a broader Israeli military response.
Netanyahu's Strong Warning to Iran
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also delivered a stern message to Iran, stating, 'Do not expect it to be quiet if you attack us.' He emphasized that any aggression would not be a repeat of past events but would be met with a much stronger response. The proposed deployment of additional US aircraft has sparked discussions within Israel regarding its potential impact on civilian air travel, as the presence of numerous military aircraft at Ben Gurion Airport could lead to flight delays and cancellations during the busy summer travel season.
