US-Iran Ceasefire: Tensions Persist as Israel Intensifies Strikes in Lebanon

A recent ceasefire between the US and Iran has paused direct hostilities, yet Israel's military operations in Lebanon continue unabated. The Israeli forces have launched extensive strikes targeting Hezbollah, resulting in significant casualties and humanitarian distress. Despite the truce, Israeli officials assert that their military campaign in Lebanon remains unaffected. The ongoing conflict has led to thousands of deaths and widespread displacement, raising concerns about the humanitarian toll. As tensions persist, the situation in the region remains precarious, with potential implications for future diplomatic efforts.

Ceasefire Between the US and Iran

A recent two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran has temporarily halted direct confrontations, addressing critical matters such as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions, airstrikes, and wartime casualties. This agreement has effectively concluded five weeks of escalating conflict. Nevertheless, the truce has not alleviated tensions in the broader region, as Israel continues its military operations in Lebanon, executing some of its most lethal strikes near Beirut despite the easing of hostilities between Washington and Tehran.

Israel's Ongoing Strikes in Lebanon

Why Israel Is Still Striking Lebanon

On Wednesday, Israeli forces conducted their most intense bombardment of Lebanon since the onset of the conflict last month, targeting over 100 Hezbollah command centers and military installations in Beirut. The magnitude and ferocity of these attacks have drawn parallels to Israel’s 1982 invasion of the city, as reported by various sources. The strikes reportedly occurred without prior warning, causing widespread panic among residents. Many fled the streets, while drivers honked desperately to clear the roads. A local shop worker, Yasser Abdallah, recounted, “I saw the blast; it was very strong. There were children killed, some with their hands cut off.”

Ceasefire Exclusions

Ceasefire Does Not Cover Lebanon

Israeli officials have clarified that the ceasefire with Iran does not apply to Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that military actions against Hezbollah would persist, and military spokesperson Avichay Adraee emphasized, “The battle in Lebanon continues, and the ceasefire does not include Lebanon.” Israel, which supported the US decision to halt strikes on Iran, insists that its operations in Lebanon are independent of the ceasefire. In response, Iran has indicated that it may reconsider the ceasefire if Israeli assaults continue, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussing alleged violations in a conversation with Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, as reported by Iranian media.

Military Objectives and Humanitarian Impact

Expanding Military Objectives

Since early March, Israel has issued evacuation orders affecting approximately 15% of Lebanese territory, particularly in the southern regions and the suburbs of Beirut. The country has also expressed its aim to create a “security zone” extending to the Litani River to safeguard communities in northern Israel.

Heavy Toll on Civilians and Fighters

The ongoing conflict has inflicted a devastating humanitarian impact, with over 1,500 fatalities reported due to Israeli air and ground operations in Lebanon. Among the casualties are more than 130 children and over 100 women, with around 1.2 million individuals displaced. On the militant side, reports indicate that over 400 Hezbollah fighters have lost their lives, while Israel has reported the loss of 10 soldiers in southern Lebanon during this period. This latest escalation represents one of the most significant setbacks for Hezbollah since a September 2024 operation that resulted in the destruction of thousands of the group’s communication devices.
