US Defense Secretary Declares Joint Operation with Israel Against Iran Not Endless
US and Israel's Military Strategy
On Monday, Pete Hegseth, the Defense Secretary of the United States, stated that the ongoing military collaboration with Israel targeting Iran is not an indefinite engagement.
Hegseth emphasized, "This is not Iraq, and it is not an endless conflict," asserting that concerns regarding prolonged warfare are unfounded.
During a briefing at the Pentagon, he described the US mission as a "clear, devastating, decisive operation" aimed at neutralizing missile threats and naval capabilities, while ensuring that nuclear weapons are not a factor.
He further remarked, "America is executing the most lethal and precise air campaign in history, dictated by our terms and with full authority," regardless of what international bodies may assert.
Hegseth also accused the Iranian government of conducting a "savage, one-sided war against America" for nearly fifty years, claiming that the US under President Trump intends to put an end to it.
He added, "This is not merely a regime change war, but the regime has indeed changed, and the world is better for it."
General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, participated in the briefing to discuss operational specifics and to express condolences for the four American soldiers who lost their lives in the ongoing conflict.
The US Central Command confirmed the death of a fourth service member on Monday.
"The identities of the deceased will be withheld until 24 hours after notifying their next of kin," the statement indicated.
Overview of the Ongoing Conflict
On Saturday, the US and Israel initiated a joint operation aimed at diminishing the capabilities of the Iranian government. In retaliation, Iran claimed that the US-Israeli operation commenced while nuclear negotiations were still ongoing.
This military action unfolded amid rising tensions concerning Tehran's nuclear ambitions, with Israel asserting that Iran is closer than ever to acquiring a nuclear weapon, which could disrupt regional security. The US has positioned itself as a protector of Israel's safety.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes.
However, due to fears of a potential military strike, exacerbated by a significant US military presence near its shores in recent months, Tehran has been compelled to re-engage in discussions with Washington regarding its nuclear agenda.
On Sunday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported killed during the US-Israeli military operation. Following his death, Tehran vowed to retaliate and launched missiles at Israel and other Gulf nations.
This incident has further heightened the already tense situation in the region.
On Monday, Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, announced it had targeted Israel with rockets and drones in response to Khamenei's death, prompting Israel to retaliate with extensive strikes in Lebanon.
