US Consulate Engages with Jorhat District on Disaster Preparedness
Meeting Focused on Emergency Response and Safety

Jorhat, May 15: On Friday, the Jorhat district administration convened a meeting with representatives from the United States Consulate General in Kolkata to discuss strategies for disaster management, emergency response coordination, and the safety of foreign visitors in the area.
The gathering took place at the office of the District Commissioner, Joy Shivani, and included senior officials from various sectors, including district administration, police, and emergency response teams.
Matthew Waitz, Deputy Consular Section and American Citizen Services official, along with Agnes Varma, L.E. supervisor for American Citizen Services, represented the US Consulate General.
Key participants included the Senior Superintendent of Police for Jorhat, the Mariani Sub-Divisional Commissioner, Additional District Commissioners, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Jorhat District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), along with officials from health, civil defence, fire services, and water resources.
During the session, the district administration provided insights into Jorhat's geographical layout, highlighting vulnerable areas and disaster-prone zones that necessitate coordinated preparedness efforts.
Officials evaluated the disaster management strategies implemented by the DDMA and discussed the district's capability to respond to emergencies, particularly in light of frequent floods and natural disasters in Assam.
The dialogue also addressed inter-agency coordination involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, Civil Defence, military branches, central agencies, and volunteer organizations.
Emphasis was placed on capacity-building initiatives, including mock drills and emergency response training programs, to enhance preparedness among essential service providers.
Furthermore, the meeting covered communication and information-sharing systems designed to ensure the safety of foreign nationals in Jorhat during emergencies.
Officials underscored the necessity of coordinated response systems and timely information dissemination to prevent panic and facilitate efficient evacuations or assistance when needed.
