US Authorities Warn of Potential Iranian Sleeper Agent Activity
US Intercepts Possible Iranian Communications
U.S. officials have detected encrypted messages believed to be from Iran, which may serve as an "operational trigger" for sleeper agents abroad, as indicated by a federal alert shared with law enforcement. This alert, reported by a news outlet, states that the message was identified through initial signals analysis and is likely of Iranian origin. The transmission reportedly occurred shortly after the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli operation on February 28. Officials noted that the message was encoded and intended for "clandestine recipients" with the necessary encryption key. Such communications are typically used to relay instructions to covert operatives or sleeper agents without depending on internet or cellular networks.
The alert suggests that the signal might be aimed at activating or instructing sleeper agents already positioned outside Iran. Authorities have yet to decode the message's content. "While we cannot ascertain the exact details of these transmissions at this time, the emergence of a new station with international rebroadcast capabilities necessitates increased situational awareness," the alert stated. It also emphasized that there is currently "no operational threat linked to a specific location." Nonetheless, law enforcement has been urged to enhance monitoring of suspicious radio-frequency activities. Security concerns have escalated following Khamenei's assassination, with Iran appointing his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new supreme leader. Officials have previously cautioned that Iranian-affiliated sleeper cells in Western nations could be activated in retaliation for the U.S.-Israeli strike. This interception signifies a rise in Iran's clandestine operations globally, raising alarms among U.S. and allied security agencies regarding potential retaliatory actions as the conflict with Iran continues.

This warning follows the recent arrest of two alleged cells in Qatar, reportedly operating under Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Qatari media reported the detention of ten individuals, with seven assigned to monitor critical military facilities and three others allegedly tasked with executing sabotage missions. Investigators recovered sensitive facility locations and communication devices from the suspects, who have reportedly acknowledged their connections to the IRGC.
These arrests come on the heels of warnings from security experts in Germany about the potential for Iran-linked sleeper cells to conduct attacks in Europe. Concerns heightened after a religious decree, or fatwa, was issued following Khamenei’s death. According to a European news outlet, Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi called for a "holy war" against the U.S. and Israel in response to Khamenei’s assassination. In light of this, German authorities have increased their vigilance, fearing that individuals associated with Iran may attempt retaliatory strikes.
Understanding Sleeper Cells
What Are Sleeper Cells?
Sleeper cells consist of covert operatives embedded within communities who remain inactive for long durations, often blending in as ordinary citizens, until they receive orders to execute acts of terrorism, espionage, or sabotage.
