US and Iran Set to Resume Nuclear Talks in Switzerland Amid Regional Tensions
Negotiations to Address Iran's Nuclear Program
The United States and Iran are preparing to commence a new round of discussions in Switzerland, focusing on limiting Tehran's nuclear ambitions and enhancing the fragile interim agreement aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Iran. Reports from various international media indicate that an urgent meeting regarding the Israel-Hezbollah situation will be included in these talks. A diplomat familiar with the situation informed CNN that this emergency session on Lebanon will be prioritized. An Iranian official emphasized that resolving the conflict in Lebanon is a top priority for their delegation. Previously, a diplomat involved in the negotiations mentioned to CBS News that addressing the Israel-Hezbollah conflict would be a key focus on the first day of the peace talks. JD Vance, before departing for Switzerland, highlighted the importance of achieving a ceasefire in Lebanon, which has recently experienced missile strikes from Israel. Notably, Israel, Hezbollah, and the Lebanese government are not part of these negotiations.
Arrival of US and Iranian Delegations
US, Iranian Delegations Arrive for Switzerland Talks
On Sunday, US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland to officially initiate discussions with Iranian representatives. Vance, accompanied by his wife, Usha Vance, landed at Emmen Air Base near Lucerne shortly before 6 am local time, as confirmed by his office. Initially, Vance was scheduled to be present at the scenic Burgenstock resort on Friday, but his departure was postponed due to escalating violence in Lebanon, leading to the cancellation of Iranian officials' attendance. The negotiations follow an agreement between Israel and Hezbollah to halt hostilities on Friday. The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, had arrived in Switzerland earlier. The discussions will also involve Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with mediators from Qatar.
