US Ambassador Emphasizes Strong India-US Defense Ties Amid Command Name Change
Focus on Defense Cooperation Over Command Title
Sergio Gor, the United States Ambassador to India, has addressed the ongoing debate regarding the renaming of the US Indo-Pacific Command. He emphasized that the emphasis should be on the robust defense collaboration between India and the US, rather than the nomenclature of a military command. During his speech at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit, Gor remarked that critics have placed excessive importance on the command's name change, asserting that military cooperation between the two nations is at an all-time high.
'Focus on Actions, Not Names'
In response to the controversy, Gor stated that the name alteration does not affect Washington's dedication to its strategic alliance with India. He expressed, "Many have made a fuss over a name change. The name on a letterhead is irrelevant; what matters is what the United States is actively doing." He highlighted the significant military collaboration between the two countries, noting that India engages in more military exercises with the US than with any other nation. "The name may have changed, but our presence remains. India conducts more exercises with the US than any other country, with activities occurring every month, whether involving Indian troops visiting the US or US troops entering the region," Gor explained.
Background of the Name Change
Gor's comments follow the US decision to revert to the original name of its Pacific Command, a change from the title established during President Donald Trump's first term. Initially set up in 1947, the command was known as the US Pacific Command until it was renamed the US Indo-Pacific Command in 2018 to acknowledge India's increasing strategic significance and the US's broader Indo-Pacific strategy aimed at ensuring a free and open region. The recent reversion to the previous name has sparked discussions among strategic analysts, with some viewing it as a potential diminishment of India's role in US regional strategy. Gor, however, dismissed this interpretation.
Strengthening Defense Ties
The ambassador asserted that the operational reality illustrates that India-US defense relations are strengthening, irrespective of administrative titles. He pointed out the regularity of military exchanges, visits from senior defense officials, and ongoing joint exercises across all military branches. Gor also mentioned that an Indian Navy delegation is expected to visit the US in the next two weeks, highlighting the ongoing progress in defense collaboration.
'A Robust Partnership'
Countering claims that India-US relations are deteriorating, Gor stated that the partnership is expanding across various sectors. He remarked, "To those who speculate online about the relationship being in jeopardy, the facts reveal otherwise. Whether in trade, defense, or people-to-people connections, our relationship is solid." According to Gor, President Trump continues to prioritize relations with India and is committed to enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, defense, and investment. His statements reinforce the US stance that, despite discussions surrounding the command's title, strategic engagement with India remains a cornerstone of Washington's regional policy.
