PATACHARKUCHI, June 8: The Patacharkuchi sub-registrar office, located in Bajali district, has been generating significant revenue for the government annually. However, it continues to operate from a building that is both unsafe and in disrepair, leading to increased public calls for a new, secure facility.
This office, one of the oldest in the area, has been serving the community since 1950. Originally situated in a rented space provided by the Prachya Sangha at Patacharkuchi, it remains vital for land and marriage registrations, among other services. Although official records date back to 1962, the office's history extends over seventy years.
Currently, the state of the building is alarming. It features deteriorating window panels, broken doors, rotting wooden supports, and damp floors and ceilings, with no proper sanitation facilities available. The three-room structure is not only unsafe but also unsuitable for both staff and visitors, with a high risk of collapse.
Local residents and visitors have voiced their frustration over the continued operation of such an essential government office under these unsanitary and unsafe conditions. The area surrounding the office is also poorly maintained, further complicating access for the public.
Despite these issues, the office significantly contributes to the state's revenue. In the financial year 2024-25, it processed 1,232 deeds, collecting registration fees of Rs 1,16,01,116 and stamp duty of Rs 1,26,37,358. For the 2025-26 financial year, 915 deeds were registered, generating Rs 72,49,767 in registration fees and Rs 85,28,592 in stamp duty. So far in the ongoing 2026-27 financial year, 118 deeds have been executed, yielding Rs 8,18,982 in registration fees and Rs 9,79,933 in stamp duty.
Although a plot of land measuring 1 katha 5 lessa has been allocated for the office as per letter no. E-215529/2022, no permanent structure has been built yet.
Previously part of Barpeta district, the office now operates under Bajali district and is crucial for property registration and revenue collection.
Residents and service users are urging the State government and relevant authorities to prioritize the construction of a new office building that includes adequate infrastructure, sanitation, and a suitable working environment.
“This office generates crores for the government, yet employees and the public are forced to operate in a dilapidated building. This situation requires urgent attention,” remarked a local resident.
The community of Patacharkuchi is hopeful that their long-standing request for a modern sub-registrar office will finally be addressed.
