Upcoming Visit of Indian PM Modi to Australia Announced by Foreign Minister Wong

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Australia soon. This visit underscores the strong strategic partnership between the two nations, focusing on shared goals for a stable Indo-Pacific region. Wong highlighted India's role as a key economic partner for Australia, especially as both countries aim to enhance their economic ties and diversify supply chains. The announcement coincides with the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting in New Delhi, where leaders discussed initiatives for critical technologies and energy security. The Quad nations also launched a framework to strengthen critical minerals supply chains across the Indo-Pacific, pledging significant financial support. This visit is anticipated to further solidify the relationship between India and Australia.
 

Announcement of Modi's Visit


On Tuesday, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong revealed that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed an upcoming visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Australia. Speaking to reporters in the capital, Wong expressed enthusiasm, stating, "My Prime Minister has today announced that Prime Minister Modi will visit Australia in the very near future. We look forward to that visit."


Wong emphasized the strong ties between Australia and India, highlighting their shared vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. She remarked, "We want to work together for our region and for our people."


The Australian Foreign Minister noted that India and Australia are comprehensive strategic partners, with a relationship built on strategic trust and significant alignment. She added, "Our economic ties continue to deepen," pointing out that India is the fastest-growing major economy globally and a vital economic ally for Australia. Wong stated, "As we aim to diversify supply chains and enhance our economy and productivity, this relationship will only strengthen."


Currently, Wong is attending the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting in New Delhi, which also includes Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration for a free and open Indo-Pacific.


During the gathering, the foreign ministers of the Quad nations (India, the United States, Japan, and Australia) introduced a comprehensive set of initiatives aimed at critical technologies, energy security, resilient supply chains, and humanitarian cooperation. Following the meeting, the four nations launched the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative Framework, committing to mobilize up to USD 20 billion in support from both government and private sectors to fortify secure and resilient critical minerals supply chains throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
