Survivor's Reaction to High Court Decision

Unnao (UP): The survivor of the 2017 Unnao rape incident expressed her devastation over the Delhi High Court's recent decision to suspend the prison sentence of former BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, labeling it a 'death sentence' for her family. She announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court against this ruling.

On Tuesday, the High Court granted bail to Sengar, who is currently serving a life sentence for his conviction, pending the outcome of his appeal against the trial court's December 2019 verdict.

The court's order included strict conditions, prohibiting Sengar from approaching the victim's home within a 5-kilometer radius and forbidding any threats towards her or her mother. Breaching these terms would result in automatic bail revocation.

Despite this ruling, Sengar will remain incarcerated due to a separate 10-year sentence related to the custodial death of the victim's father, for which he has not received bail.

The survivor, who was a minor at the time of her abduction and assault, conveyed her fears to a news agency from Delhi, stating that the withdrawal of security for her family, legal representatives, and witnesses has intensified her anxiety.

"If a convict can secure bail in such serious cases, how can the daughters of our nation feel safe? This ruling feels like 'kaal' (death) to us," she remarked.

She lamented the disparity in justice, saying, "Those with wealth prevail, while those without suffer losses."

As she prepared to protest near Mandi House alongside her mother against the court's decision, she reiterated her intention to challenge the High Court's ruling in the Supreme Court.

The Unnao rape case, along with related matters, was transferred from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi following directives from the Supreme Court in August 2019.
