Unique Case of Twins with Different Fathers Surfaces in Portugal
Extraordinary Pregnancy Story
In a remarkable incident from the city of Mineiros in Goiás, Portugal, a 19-year-old woman gave birth to twins, each fathered by different men. This unusual situation arose when the woman became pregnant after having relations with two men on the same day.
After the twins turned eight months old, a DNA test was conducted. Surprisingly, the test confirmed that one child's DNA matched with one father, while the other child’s DNA did not match. This led the woman to recall her encounter with the second man on the same day, and a subsequent DNA test confirmed that he was indeed the father of the second child.
Despite having two different fathers, both children can have the same name on their birth certificates, as the woman’s partner is taking care of both. This unique case has left even medical professionals astonished.
Such occurrences are extremely rare. Dr. Tulio Jorge Franco, who researches unusual pregnancies, noted that there have only been about 20 documented cases worldwide where twins have different fathers, a phenomenon known scientifically as heteroparental superfecundation.
The doctor who delivered the twins explained that this happens when two eggs from the same mother are fertilized by different men. He also mentioned that the pregnancy was normal and both children were born healthy, without any health issues so far. He expressed his surprise at witnessing such a case.
Currently, the twins are 1 year and 4 months old, and the story came to light when the woman allowed the doctor to disclose this information under the condition of anonymity.
