Guwahati, Aug 5: On Wednesday, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda visited the flood-affected Nepali Khuti village in Sivasagar district, pledging comprehensive support from the Central government as the state continues to deal with the aftermath of one of its most severe floods in recent times.
During his three-day trip to Assam, Nadda navigated through muddy roads on a tractor, accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and several cabinet ministers, including Ashok Singhal, Keshab Mahanta, Susanta Borgohain, and Pijush Hazarika, to evaluate the damage.
"The destruction of property and livestock is extensive, and we are here to support the community during this challenging period. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tasked me with assessing the situation. I have discussed the matter with Chief Minister Sarma, and we will have a comprehensive meeting this evening," Nadda stated after engaging with local residents affected by the floods.
The Union Minister praised the Assam government's swift relief efforts, noting that the response was commendable given the disaster's magnitude.
"The Chief Minister has been proactive in managing relief operations in the flood-impacted regions. While recovery will take time, I assure the public that the Government of India will provide all necessary support, including financial aid, compensation, and rehabilitation," he added.
Nadda also mentioned that Central teams are currently evaluating the damage caused by the floods.
Chief Minister Sarma remarked that the Union Minister's visit would provide the Centre with a direct understanding of the devastation caused by the floods.
"Today, JP Nadda visited the affected regions and witnessed the struggles faced by families impacted by the floods. The Prime Minister has sent him to evaluate the situation, and I am confident he will inform the Prime Minister, allowing us to extend further assistance to those in need," Sarma expressed.
Later, Nadda is expected to visit the nearby Charaideo district before heading to Mon district in Nagaland for official duties.
He will then return to Dibrugarh to lead a review meeting with the Assam government and participate in local events before spending the night in the city. On August 6, he plans to travel to Yazali in Arunachal Pradesh's Keyi Panyor district.
This visit comes amid increasing calls for senior NDA leaders to assess the situation in flood-affected Assam following this year's catastrophic flooding.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in the state remains dire, with overnight rains posing a risk of further flooding in low-lying areas.
As reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the death toll has reached 89, with over 1.22 lakh individuals affected across five districts.
The ASDMA also indicated that the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh in Golaghat district continues to be in a "severe flood situation" as of Wednesday morning, advising residents to avoid the river due to rising water levels.
Additionally, the latest flood bulletin from the authority reported two more flood-related fatalities in the last 24 hours, one each in Sivasagar and Golaghat districts.
