Union Minister Criticizes Opposition's Protest Against VB-G Ram G Bill
Minister's Remarks on Opposition's Protest
Union Minister Giriraj Singh has expressed strong disapproval of the 12-hour sit-in staged by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs in the Parliament against the VB-G Ram G Bill. He labeled the protest as a political maneuver, asserting that it does not genuinely aim to benefit workers. Singh emphasized that only those disconnected from labor issues would oppose the VB-G Ram G Bill 2025, suggesting that the dissenters are merely seeking political gain.
Labor Welfare and the Bill's Implications
He further questioned whether offering a guarantee of 125 days instead of 100 days is inappropriate, arguing that it serves the interests of workers. According to Singh, those opposing the bill are enemies of the labor force, regardless of whether they protest for 12 days or 12 hours. This statement follows the TMC's demonstration against the passage of the Developed India Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Bill.
TMC's Critique of BJP
TMC MP Dola Sen criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the party was not part of the freedom struggle and thus does not honor figures like Mahatma Gandhi. She stated, "BJP members were not part of the independence movement, which is why they do not respect Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters." Sen further remarked that the passage of the VB-G Ram G Bill in Parliament symbolically represents another assassination of Gandhi, as his name was removed from the NREGA.
Legislative Process and Government's Position
The bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on December 18 and in the Rajya Sabha on December 19 amidst opposition uproar, is claimed by the government to offer better terms compared to the MGNREGA. A key feature of the new legislation is the increase in guaranteed workdays from 100 to 125.
