Union Minister Advocates for Reading Culture at Assam Book Fair
Promoting Literature for National Progress
Guwahati, Jan 3: Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has called on the youth to embrace reading, highlighting its crucial role in fostering an intellectually advanced society.
During his address at the Assam Book Fair in Guwahati, Sonowal remarked that literature has the power to enlighten minds, refine thoughts, and enrich communities across generations.
He stated, "The vast array of literature embodies the conscience, creativity, and imagination of a society, significantly contributing to the intellectual growth of a nation."
Sonowal referred to book fairs as "sacred spaces of knowledge" that promote intellectual development.
He emphasized, "Every initiative to encourage reading is a step towards the intellectual upliftment of our people," urging the youth to develop a reading habit.
The minister expressed optimism about the strong turnout of readers at the fair, viewing it as a positive indicator for society. He described books as treasures that can be revisited, each time revealing fresh insights and perspectives.
Sonowal reflected on the lasting impact of Assamese literary figures who have shaped the cultural identity through their writings.
He warned against replacing in-depth reading with superficial digital consumption, stating, "Despite the volume of social media we engage with, it is only through books that we find completeness. Reading fosters depth, imagination, and critical thinking."
He acknowledged the shift in reading habits due to technology, noting that digital resources like e-books, audiobooks, and online libraries can enhance traditional reading and broaden access to knowledge.
Sonowal also stressed the importance of modernizing libraries, particularly in smaller towns, and making Assamese literature more accessible in contemporary, reader-friendly formats.
