Call for a Double-Engine Government

Jorhat, Mar 27: On Friday, Pabitra Margherita, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, emphasized the importance of maintaining a BJP-led 'double-engine government' in Assam, arguing that this model is crucial for ongoing development, economic advancement, and security within the state.

During a press conference held in Titabor, Margherita expressed that the citizens of Assam are eager to place their trust once more in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership to secure long-term progress.

"This press briefing aims to deliver a clear message regarding the necessity of a double-engine government. Every individual in Assam, from rural areas to urban centers, desires a government that guarantees development and a prosperous, 'Viksit Assam'," he stated.

He asserted that voters are not inclined to elect opposition representatives to Dispur, emphasizing that the populace favors leaders who can collaborate effectively with the central government.

"People do not wish to elect opposition members who could obstruct development. They prefer BJP representatives who will advocate for the community and ensure that central initiatives reach the grassroots level," he added.

Margherita drew comparisons with states governed by opposition parties, claiming that the lack of a double-engine government has negatively affected the execution of central schemes and infrastructure projects.

"In West Bengal, despite the Centre allocating substantial funds of Rs 93 crore, projects have faltered due to poor coordination. For example, funds designated for railway expansion have not been fully utilized, and land acquisition has stalled. Similarly, in Punjab, even with Rs 10,000 crore approved for highway expansion, land acquisition remains at a standstill," he remarked.

He also highlighted issues with healthcare schemes, noting that beneficiaries in certain states are not receiving the full benefits.

"In states lacking a double-engine government, initiatives like Ayushman Bharat are not effectively reaching the populace due to administrative challenges and a lack of commitment," he claimed.

Margherita praised Assam's advancements, stating that the state has experienced rapid economic growth under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

"Assam has seen a notable rise in per capita income, and even the Reserve Bank has recognized the state's swift economic progress," he pointed out.

He mentioned significant infrastructure improvements, such as expanded road networks, bridges over the Brahmaputra, elevated corridors, and the initiation of semiconductor-related projects.

"These accomplishments demonstrate what can be achieved through a coordinated effort between the Centre and the state," he remarked.

Referring to the previous Congress administration, Margherita accused it of rampant corruption and inefficiency.

"There was a time when securing jobs required bribes. Those were dark times in Assam's history. Today, under Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership, governance has become transparent and focused on development," he asserted.

Reiterating his message, the Union Minister stated, "For sustainable development, growth, and a secure future, Assam requires a double-engine government. We seek the support and mandate of the people to continue this transformative journey."
