New Delhi, October 7: On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet underscored the significance of peace and development in the Northeast as a fundamental aspect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy for national security, governance, and public trust, coinciding with his 25 years of leadership.
The resolution from the Cabinet emphasized the government's commitment to resolving the long-standing insurgency issues in the Northeast through a blend of security tactics, political discussions, rehabilitation of former militants, and developmental projects.
It noted that the approach towards the region has evolved from a strictly security-focused stance to one that prioritizes dialogue with insurgent factions, fostering peace, enhancing connectivity, and promoting economic growth.
The resolution indicated that the government aims to transform security advancements into sustainable development by fostering an investment-friendly environment, enhancing public services, and strengthening ties between the Northeast and the rest of India.
Connectivity has been identified as a crucial element of this strategy, with infrastructure projects designed to facilitate the movement of people and goods while integrating the region more closely with the national economy.
The Cabinet's resolution stated that peace initiatives in the Northeast are integral to a broader national security framework that seeks to mitigate violence while bolstering public confidence and creating avenues for long-term growth.
It also highlighted the government's initiatives to combat Left Wing Extremism and other violent activities, situating the Northeast peace process within the larger context of Prime Minister Modi’s national security achievements.
The resolution emphasized the necessity of political dialogue and rehabilitation in addressing insurgency issues. The focus on negotiations with armed groups reflects a commitment to finding enduring political resolutions to conflicts that have plagued the Northeast for many years.
The government’s strategy for the Northeast increasingly associates peace with development, investment, and connectivity, ensuring that enhanced security leads to improved economic prospects and public services for the region's inhabitants.
The resolution, which outlines Modi’s political evolution from Gujarat to the national arena, commended his readiness to implement significant reforms despite potential political challenges.
“GST, welfare delivery reforms, and the abolition of colonial-era laws illustrate his resolve to tackle persistent issues,” it remarked.
Additionally, it referenced initiatives promoting cleanliness, digital transactions, and local products as efforts to foster greater public engagement in governance and reform.
The Cabinet's evaluation positions the Northeast peace process as a vital component of the Modi administration’s comprehensive national security strategy, with peace, connectivity, and development recognized as interlinked priorities for the region.
