Budget Presentation Date Confirmed

New Delhi: On Monday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will unveil the Union Budget for 2026-27 on February 1, which coincidentally falls on a Sunday.

The Finance Minister is set to start her budget presentation at 11 a.m. in the Lok Sabha, as confirmed by the Speaker during a press briefing.

The Budget Session of Parliament is scheduled to kick off on January 28 and will run until April 2.

There was some confusion regarding the date since February 1 is typically the budget presentation day, but this year it lands on a Sunday. The Lok Sabha Speaker has now clarified this matter.

Previously, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju indicated that the first phase of the Budget Session would begin on January 28 and wrap up by February 13. The Parliament will reconvene for the second phase on March 9, continuing until April 2.

The Minister noted that President Droupadi Murmu has sanctioned the summoning of both Houses of Parliament for the 2026 Budget Session upon the Central government's recommendation.

Parliament will not convene on January 29 due to the Beating Retreat ceremony, but both Houses are expected to meet on January 30, when the Economic Survey is likely to be presented. Additionally, Parliament will not meet on Saturday, January 31, the day before the Union Budget is presented.

Following discussions on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address and the Budget, Parliament is anticipated to take a recess for nearly a month starting February 13. The session will resume on March 9 and is expected to conclude on April 2.

Officials mentioned that while Parliament typically adjourns on Fridays, this year's budget session might end a day earlier due to Good Friday on April 3.
