Anil Chaudhary, a former ICC umpire, has shed light on the impressive earnings that match officials receive in both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international cricket. Umpires play a crucial role in maintaining fairness and order during matches, yet their contributions often go unrecognized.

Unlike players, umpires typically work behind the scenes, starting their careers at district and state levels before advancing to domestic competitions, which can lead to opportunities in the IPL and international cricket governed by the ICC.

Earnings Breakdown by Anil Chaudhary

In a recent podcast with journalist Sushant Sinha, Chaudhary, who has officiated in international cricket for over ten years and has been part of the IPL since its launch in 2008, discussed the financial aspects of umpiring.

He revealed that match officials can earn between INR 45 to 50 lakh during a single IPL season. Those who also officiate in prominent domestic tournaments can make an additional INR 20 to 25 lakh. For T20I matches, umpires receive around INR 2 lakh, while Test matches yield approximately INR 8 lakh over five days.

Chaudhary elaborated, "It's $4,000 per match, $6,000 for playoffs, and $8,000 for finals, with a daily allowance of about $6,000. An average IPL umpire can earn around INR 45-50 lakh in one season, plus an extra INR 20-25 lakh if they officiate in domestic cricket."

He emphasized that umpires are compensated regardless of whether a match is played or abandoned.

Comparing Umpires' Pay to Cricketers' Earnings

The financial rewards for umpires starkly contrast with those of cricketers. While players often secure multi-million-dollar contracts through endorsements and brand partnerships, umpires work under a structured fee system that values consistency and the ability to uphold the game's integrity.

Indian cricketers earn INR 15 lakh, INR 6 lakh, and INR 3 lakh for Test, ODI, and T20I matches, respectively, in addition to their annual contracts, IPL salaries, and bonuses. In contrast, umpires primarily depend on match fees and daily allowances, with their earnings increasing as they move from domestic cricket to the IPL and international levels.

The salary of Indian cricketers varies based on their BCCI central contract category, IPL agreements, and endorsements, while umpires' fees are determined by the level of matches they officiate, with higher panels and elite assignments offering better pay.
