Police Crack Down on International Call Center Scam

In a significant operation, authorities in New Delhi apprehended five individuals, including a 34-year-old woman from Odisha, for allegedly operating an illegal international call center in Uttam Nagar. The suspects reportedly targeted foreign nationals by impersonating representatives from major companies like Amazon and Apple, as stated by police on Wednesday.

Acting on specific intelligence, law enforcement conducted a raid at the call center located in Vipin Garden during the night of September 28-29. They seized ten laptops, four mobile phones, and various calling equipment. According to police, the suspects utilized voice modulation software to masquerade as technical support agents, gaining the trust of their victims. They then tricked these individuals into installing remote-access applications such as AnyDesk, leading to unauthorized payments and the sharing of sensitive financial data.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Simranjeet, 33, from Ludhiana; Mark Martin, 47, from Gurugram; Elton John Salters, 43, from Kolkata; Abhishek S Abraham, 30, from Delhi; and Anita, 34, from Odisha. A senior police official revealed that Simranjeet was responsible for managing the call center's operational framework, including the distribution of user IDs and passwords. Martin was in charge of handling international calls and persuading victims, while Salters and Abraham served as call center agents. Anita operated as a caller, using a dedicated laptop to reach out to foreign nationals under false identities. A case has been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
