Since taking on the role in July 2023, Agarkar's current term is set to conclude in September. As the BCCI prepares for its 95th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai, discussions about his future have become a focal point within Indian cricket's influential circles.

Agarkar was absent from a review meeting in September due to being out of town and faced connectivity issues that prevented him from joining virtually. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later confirmed that there were no discussions regarding changes to the selection committee or Agarkar's position.

BCCI to Decide on Agarkar's Future

The BCCI leadership, including president Mithun Manhas, vice-president Rajeev Shukla, secretary Devajit Saikia, and joint-secretary Prabhtej Bhatia, convened at the board's headquarters, accompanied by representatives from affiliated state boards for crucial discussions.

Post-AGM, BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla announced that Arun Singh Dhumal and Anustup Majumdar would continue their roles in the IPL governing council, while the AGM empowered the office-bearers to make decisions regarding selectors.

Shukla stated, "Arun Singh Dhumal and Majumdar retain IPL governing council posts; AGM authorises office-bearers to take a decision on selectors."

Agarkar's Position Under Scrutiny

Ajit Agarkar's role as chief selector has come under scrutiny following the Rohit Sharma situation, with concerns about the veteran batter's ODI future intensifying the focus on the selection committee ahead of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Before the Lord's Test, the selection committee reportedly informed Rohit that he would not be included in World Cup considerations. However, BCCI's intervention allowed him to remain a contender for the prestigious event, with secretary Devajit Saikia publicly supporting his current form.

Parthiv Patel: A Potential Successor

As uncertainty looms over Ajit Agarkar's position, former India wicketkeeper-batter and current Gujarat Titans batting coach Parthiv Patel has emerged as a strong candidate to assume the chief selector role if discussions for Agarkar's contract extension do not materialize.

Reports indicate that Patel's name has been circulating in Indian cricket's influential circles for the past six months as the board prepares for a future without Agarkar. Since Agarkar's appointment in July 2023, his future has been a topic of ongoing discussion as the BCCI evaluates its options.

In light of the speculation surrounding his potential appointment, Parthiv shared a cryptic message on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Coming soon. I'm in," leaving it unclear whether he was confirming his upcoming role or simply responding to the media buzz.

Parthiv Patel's Experience

If appointed as chief selector, Parthiv Patel, who has played 25 Tests, 38 ODIs, and 2 T20Is, would become the most experienced member of the current selection committee in terms of Test cricket, surpassing Shiv Sunder Das, who has represented India in 23 Tests.

With the BCCI office-bearers tasked with deliberating on the selectors and Agarkar remaining silent about his future, a decisive announcement is anticipated in the coming days, potentially leading to a significant leadership shift in the selection panel of Indian cricket.
