Ambush on Tinsukia Camp

Margherita, Mar 22: The banned group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) has taken responsibility for a recent ambush on a commando camp located in Tinsukia.

In a statement issued on Sunday, ULFA-I announced that the operation, dubbed “Operation Bujoni,” was executed by its members.

The organization noted that it had previously halted offensive actions against the Assam Police as a gesture of goodwill following the 2021 Assembly elections. However, they accused security forces of continuing aggressive actions against their members, including killings and arrests, which they referred to as 'encounter killings.'

Describing these actions as 'unacceptable and unjustified,' ULFA-I claimed that numerous members had been killed, injured, or disabled during operations across various districts, while others remain imprisoned under strict laws.

The group stated that their repeated warnings to de-escalate the situation were ignored, leading to this latest attack, which they characterized as a 'message' to deter further military actions.

While claiming responsibility, ULFA-I emphasized that they do not wish to create hostility with individual Assam Police personnel but cautioned that ongoing actions could escalate tensions further.

The ambush occurred at the Jagun 10 Mile camp, where assailants launched 4 to 5 Rocket-Propelled Grenades in a surprise attack, resulting in injuries to four Assam Police commandos.

The injured personnel have been identified as Chitranjan Mili and Debashis Bora from Jorhat, Ravi Garh from Chabua, and Jambuch Marak from Goalpara. All four have been transported to a nearby hospital, with reports indicating that three are in critical condition and require emergency surgery.

A senior intelligence official remarked, 'This was a calculated move to disrupt the peaceful election environment. We are treating this as a top-priority threat, and the search for the perpetrators is ongoing.'

Security sources have confirmed the severity of the attack, raising new concerns about the outfit's capability to conduct operations deep within Upper Assam, despite increased security measures for election duties.

A high alert has been declared across Tinsukia district and the surrounding interstate borders, with intensified search operations currently in progress.
