Kyiv Summit Aims to Strengthen Regional Cooperation

On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened leaders from seven neighboring nations to discuss enhancing collaboration, coinciding with a series of Russian airstrikes that resulted in fires and casualties across various regions.

This first summit of the Carpathian Eight includes Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary, with participation from the European Union.

The meeting occurs amidst stalled US-led negotiations aimed at resolving Russia's prolonged invasion, particularly concerning territorial disputes in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine is also pursuing security assurances from its allies.

Countries like Poland and Romania have been strong advocates for Ukraine, while others, including Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia, have opted against providing direct military support.

Zelenskyy expressed on Telegram that this summit marks a pivotal step towards reinforcing relationships among the nations and establishing a robust cooperative framework within the EU.

He emphasized that the participating nations would collaborate on security, energy, logistics, cross-border economic initiatives, and community support.

Impact of Russian Strikes

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported that two individuals lost their lives and two others sustained injuries due to Russian strikes in the Zhytomyr region, located west of Kyiv.

These attacks ignited fires in warehouses and manufacturing facilities. Rescuers had to withdraw during ongoing air raid alerts, while emergency teams conducted inspections for explosive remnants. Firefighters eventually managed to control the fires.

In another incident, a Russian drone assault led to the destruction of a shopping center in Zaporizhzhia, injuring one person and causing a fire, according to the emergency service.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that its air defenses intercepted and eliminated 629 Ukrainian drones overnight across 14 regions, including Crimea and the Azov and Black seas.

Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that over 350 drones were directed towards the capital, with most being neutralized far from the city, while 64 were shot down as they neared Moscow.

In the Rostov region, near the Ukrainian border, local officials reported damage to homes and buildings from an attack, but no casualties were reported, according to Rostov Governor Yuri Slyusar.

The Russian military confirmed it conducted drone strikes targeting Ukrainian ports, vessels, and military logistics centers, hitting a bulk carrier in Chornomorsk and a logistics facility near Odesa, which was allegedly used for military cargo distribution from Europe.
