Intensified Drone Strikes by Ukraine

Moscow: On Sunday, Ukraine executed a significant drone offensive across Russian territory, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals, marking one of the most extensive aerial assaults by Kyiv during the ongoing conflict.

This year, Ukraine has intensified its military operations against Russia, utilizing long-range missiles and drone swarms to target critical military and energy infrastructures. Notably, the Ukrainian forces have increasingly attacked major Wildberries warehouses, destroying billions in merchandise and bringing the war's impact closer to the Russian populace nearly four and a half years into the full-scale invasion.

According to Russia's Ministry of Defence, they successfully intercepted 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that around 600 drones were detected heading towards the capital, with a significant portion neutralized over the Moscow region.

Tragically, an 83-year-old man lost his life when a drone struck a private residence in the Moscow area, as confirmed by local Governor Andrey Vorobyov. He also noted that a drone attack ignited a fire at a Wildberries facility in Podolsk.

In another incident, a drone strike targeted three towns in Russia's Rostov region, resulting in five fatalities, as reported by local Governor Yury Slyusar. This attack involved over 150 drones, damaging homes and a railway station while also causing a forest fire.

In a retaliatory move, a Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih in Ukraine resulted in two deaths and left 14 others injured, as shared by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on social media. Additionally, one person was reported dead in Sumy.

In the southern Zaporizhzhia region, a couple perished when their home was hit by a Russian missile, according to Ivan Fedorov, the head of the local military administration.

Further attacks led to fires across Kyiv, injuring six individuals. Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, stating, "Wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure. Since this morning, air raid alerts have been ongoing in many regions as the Russians launched another wave of drones."

The Russian Ministry of Defence announced that they targeted a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and several military-industrial sites in Kyiv, including a facility responsible for producing Ukraine's Flamingo missiles.

These domestically manufactured missiles have become crucial for Ukraine's long-range operations against Russia, with Zelenskyy revealing that they were used to strike a rocket research and production center in Samara, located approximately 900 kilometers (560 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Romania's Ministry of National Defence reported that a Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 fighter jet successfully shot down a drone that had entered Romanian airspace on Sunday.

The drone was detected by surveillance systems at 4:44 am, approximately 24 kilometers (14.9 miles) north of Galati, a city near the border with Moldova. The Spanish F-18, conducting air policing duties, made radar contact with the drone and received approval to engage, successfully downing it at 05:01.

Officials did not disclose the drone's origin. This incident follows a series of drone encounters in Romania, where pilots have previously shot down three drones over three days as Russian attacks near the border escalated. Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Romania has reported numerous drone incidents, including crashes and explosions on its territory.

Acting Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated on X that the Spanish deployment in Romania was increased at the request of Romania and NATO to strengthen the Eastern Flank following prior drone incidents, marking Spain's fourth such deployment.
