UK Strikes Back: Russian Diplomat Expelled Amid Rising Tensions
Diplomatic Tensions Escalate Between UK and Russia
London: On Wednesday, the United Kingdom took decisive action by expelling a Russian diplomat as a direct response to Moscow's recent expulsion of a British official, which was accompanied by a smear campaign.
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office summoned the Russian ambassador to convey this reciprocal measure. Such actions highlight the escalating tensions between Moscow and Western nations.
In a statement, the Foreign Office emphasized that this kind of behavior is entirely unacceptable, asserting that harassment or intimidation of diplomatic personnel will not be tolerated.
This latest expulsion follows Russia's decision last month to remove a British diplomat, who was accused of espionage—a claim the UK dismissed as baseless.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia alleged that the British diplomat attempted to obtain sensitive economic information through unofficial discussions with Russian experts. Consequently, the diplomat was instructed to exit Russia within a fortnight.
Since the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, diplomatic relations between Russia and NATO countries have deteriorated significantly, resulting in numerous reciprocal expulsions of diplomats, marking the lowest point in relations since the Cold War.
