UIDAI Urges Timely Biometric Updates for Children Over Seven
Importance of Biometric Updates
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has once again called on parents and guardians to ensure that children who have reached the age of seven complete their Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) promptly. This update is essential for those whose Aadhaar biometric details remain unaltered.
Completing this update is vital for accessing various services, including school admissions, entrance tests, scholarships, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programs. UIDAI emphasized that only an Aadhaar card with updated biometrics guarantees smooth access to these services.
Free Update for Young Children
For children under five years old, only photographs and demographic data are collected during Aadhaar enrollment, as biometric data like fingerprints and iris scans cannot be taken at that age.
UIDAI states:
- The first biometric update (MBU) is free if completed between the ages of 5 and 7.
- A fee of Rs 100 applies for updates after the age of 7.
- Failure to update within the required timeframe may lead to deactivation of the Aadhaar number, impacting access to essential services.
- Maintaining accurate Aadhaar information is crucial for service accessibility.
The authority has clarified that updating biometric information is not merely a formality; it is essential for preserving the authenticity and reliability of a child's Aadhaar data. An updated Aadhaar card has become a key tool for identification and service access in government programs and institutions.
