Thackeray's Stance on Upcoming Vice Presidential Election
As the vice presidential election approaches on September 9, Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray announced on Friday that the party will unanimously vote in favor of the India Bloc candidate. During a press conference, Thackeray expressed uncertainty regarding the sudden resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. He stated, "We will vote unanimously for the India Bloc candidate. This upcoming election is crucial for the nation as we need to uphold the dignity of the vice presidential office. It is essential to have a suitable individual for this position. We are still unaware of the circumstances that led to the former vice president's abrupt resignation."
India Bloc's Candidate Announcement
India Bloc has nominated former Supreme Court Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy as their candidate for the vice presidential election. This announcement was made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge following a meeting of the India Bloc in the national capital. Just a day earlier, VCK founder Thol Thirumavalavan criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly forcing Vice President Dhankhar to resign, claiming that this action has created a crisis in the country. He urged all opposition MPs to support the India Bloc's candidate, Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy.
Thirumavalavan's Critique of BJP
Speaking to reporters in Viluppuram on Wednesday, Thirumavalavan stated that the BJP has imposed the vice presidential election upon them. He emphasized that the vice president was already coerced into resigning, and no one knows the reasons behind this situation. He expressed concern over the crisis created by the BJP and RSS in the country, stating that there is a need for someone with the right understanding and courage to protect the constitution. Therefore, he called on all MPs from democratic forces to vote for B. Sudarshan Reddy, urging that opposition votes should not be fragmented. The election for the vice presidency will see a direct contest between Justice Reddy and NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan.
