Guwahati, Oct 11: Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that 12 individuals from Bangladesh, including three minors, were detained in Goalpara district for illegally crossing into India. He expressed concerns regarding a potential human trafficking and infiltration network.
According to a detailed account shared on social media, the apprehensions occurred after a local resident noticed a group of individuals appearing distressed and wandering around on Friday night.
The group, consisting of nine adults and three children, revealed that they had been smuggled into India through Jaflong in Meghalaya on October 5 by a broker named Sabor, as stated by Sarma in his social media update on Saturday night.
"Subsequently, a Khasi individual who was with the broker transported them to Guwahati, where they remained for three days," he explained, noting that the broker escaped near the Guwahati railway station after allegedly taking 7,000 Bangladeshi Taka and a mobile phone from them.

Afterward, the group traveled by bus to Goalpara on Friday night, where they were eventually discovered by a local resident, according to Sarma.
"The broker allegedly showed them video calls of other Bangladeshi nationals employed in a company in Guwahati and promised them jobs," Sarma added.
For the nine adults, a fee of Rs 20,000 per person was to be charged by the company owner, which would be deducted from their wages, he noted.
"Authorities suspect a human trafficking and illegal migration angle, and investigations are ongoing," Sarma stated.
"While these unwarranted guests will be dealt with accordingly, we will hunt down their hosts here and treat them with the right provisions of Indian law. We remain alert, as always," he reiterated.

Previously, Assam Police had assured that both the state police and the BSF would take all necessary measures to prevent infiltration from Bangladesh.
