Trump's Bold Warning: BRICS Nations Face 10% Tariff for Challenging the Dollar
Trump's Stance on BRICS and the Dollar
New York/Washington: During a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump asserted that the BRICS alliance was formed with the intention of undermining the United States and diminishing the value of the dollar. He announced that countries within this bloc would incur a 10% tariff.
Trump emphasized, "If they are part of BRICS, they will have to pay a 10% fee." He expressed his belief that the group was created to harm the U.S. and replace the dollar as the global standard.
"If they want to engage in this game, I can play too. Anyone in BRICS will face a 10% charge," he stated, indicating that this policy would be implemented soon.
He further claimed that BRICS was on the verge of disintegration, although a few nations still remained involved.
In Trump's view, BRICS does not pose a significant threat, but he warned that their efforts to destabilize the dollar could lead to another currency taking its place as the standard. He insisted that the U.S. would not relinquish its status as the world's reserve currency.
"Losing the dollar's status would be akin to losing a major war; it would fundamentally change our nation. We will not allow that to happen... the dollar remains supreme, and we intend to maintain it that way," he declared.
He concluded by stating that while other nations may challenge the dollar, they would face severe consequences, which he doubted they would be willing to accept.
The leaders of the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran—recently convened in Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit held on July 6-7.
On Sunday, Trump had already warned of imposing an additional 10% tariff on countries that align with the so-called 'anti-American' policies of the BRICS coalition.
