Trump's Bold Claims on Iran's Uranium Deal: What You Need to Know
Trump's Surprising Assertions About Iran's Nuclear Program
What kind of agreement did Munir Nakir strike with Iranian leaders that left Trump so elated while in Washington? He began to assert that Iran was ready to hand over enriched uranium necessary for nuclear bombs. This is the same uranium that Trump's military and agents failed to locate during a 40-day conflict, despite conducting attacks on Iran's nuclear sites from Natanz to Isfahan. Trump even went as far as to claim that they had dismantled Iran's nuclear capabilities, stating that the country would be unable to produce nuclear weapons for the next two decades.
The Uranium Controversy
The uranium that could not be found is now supposedly going to be handed over by Iran itself. The entire conflict with Iran revolved around this uranium. At one point, it seemed that Trump was considering the use of targeted atomic bombs to bring Iran to its knees. During the sixth week of the war, Trump publicly declared that he could obliterate Iran's entire civilization in a single night. Although he did not follow through on this threat, it only intensified Iran's resolve. The Iranian parliament even proposed withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and accelerating the enrichment of uranium necessary for nuclear bombs.
Iran's Enrichment Capabilities
Iran has enriched 400 kilograms of uranium to 60%. This means that the U-235 isotope, essential for bombs, has been increased to 60%. Naturally, uranium ore contains only 0.7% U-235. Enriched uranium at this level is not used for energy; it is solely for bomb-making. After reaching 60% enrichment, it can be quickly escalated to 90%. With 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 90%, Iran could potentially create at least ten nuclear bombs. While Trump has been vocal about Iran's nuclear program since taking office, no Iranian leader has indicated a willingness to hand over their enriched uranium to the U.S. Russia has offered to keep Iran's enriched uranium in safe custody if Iran desires.
