Trump's Approval Rating Hits New Low Amid Economic Concerns and Foreign Policy Issues
Trump's Approval Rating Declines
According to a recent poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, Donald Trump's approval rating has dropped to its lowest point during his current term. The survey, which was completed on Monday, indicates that only 34% of Americans approve of his performance, a decrease from 36% in a prior poll conducted between April 15 and 20. Since Trump resumed office in January 2025, his approval has steadily declined from 47% at that time.
The decline in popularity appears to be linked to rising economic pressures and challenges in foreign policy, particularly following military actions by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. Only 22% of those surveyed expressed approval of Trump's management of the cost of living, down from 25% previously. Gasoline prices in the US have surged over 40% since the onset of the conflict, now averaging around $4.18 per gallon, largely due to disruptions in global oil supplies affecting about 20% of trade.
This price increase has intensified financial strain on households and raised concerns among Republicans regarding their chances in the upcoming congressional midterm elections. While 78% of Republican respondents still support Trump, 41% disapprove of his handling of living costs. Among independent voters, who are crucial in elections, Democrats currently lead by 14 points in congressional race preferences, with 34% favoring Democrats compared to 20% for Republicans, while a quarter remain undecided.
Trump's economic approval rating is at 27%, the lowest recorded during his time in office from 2017 to 2021, and below the lowest ratings of his predecessor, Joe Biden. Support for the US conflict with Iran has also waned, with only 34% backing it, down from 36% in mid-April and 38% in mid-March. Although a ceasefire was agreed upon earlier this month, ongoing tensions and threats to shipping in the Persian Gulf continue to impact global energy markets.
Most of the poll responses were gathered before a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday, where a gunman was apprehended before reaching the area where Trump was dining. Federal prosecutors have charged the suspect with attempted assassination of the president. Historically, Trump's approval ratings have hovered around 40% during his first term, and the current figure is slightly above his previous low of 33%.
