Trump Issues Ultimatum to Iran Amid Rising Tensions
Escalating Threats from the U.S.
On Monday, President Donald Trump reiterated his warnings to Iran, stating that if a deal is not reached soon, critical infrastructure in the nation would face bombing from U.S. forces.
Trump has extended the deadline for Iran to negotiate a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz until 8 PM Eastern Time on Sunday, which corresponds to 5:30 AM on Wednesday in India.
During a press briefing, Trump declared, “We have a strategy, leveraging our military strength, to destroy every bridge in Iran by midnight tomorrow [Eastern Time], and to incapacitate all power plants in the country... This could unfold within four hours if we choose to proceed. We hope it doesn’t come to that.”
Latest Developments in the West Asia Conflict:
- Trump remarked that Iran's proposal to resolve the conflict was insufficient to prevent the U.S. from executing its bombing plans unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. He acknowledged the proposal as a significant step but deemed it inadequate. He mentioned that negotiations are currently ongoing with intermediaries.
- The Indian embassy in Tehran has successfully assisted in evacuating 1,777 Indian nationals to Armenia and Azerbaijan for their return to India since the onset of the conflict, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
- According to reports, the U.S. intelligence agency conducted a deception operation to mislead Iranian authorities searching for the crew of a downed U.S. fighter jet. CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed that one of the airmen was rescued after hiding in a mountain crevice.
Overview of the Ongoing Conflict
The conflict escalated on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran, citing Tehran's actions as a direct threat to Israel's existence. The U.S. has positioned itself as a protector of Israeli security. In retaliation, Iran has targeted Israel and U.S. military installations in the region, as well as major cities in Gulf nations.
Iran has effectively obstructed the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for international trade, leading to a global energy crisis, as approximately 20% of the world's oil supply transits through this narrow passage.
Israel has expressed concerns that Iran is nearing the capability to develop a nuclear weapon, which could significantly disrupt the regional security landscape. Iran, however, insists that its nuclear ambitions are solely for peaceful purposes.
