Trump Introduces Upgraded Air Force One: A New Era for Presidential Travel
A New Look for Air Force One
Washington: President Donald Trump has revealed a newly upgraded Air Force One, which was previously owned by Qatar, and is expected to commence its commissioning flights before it officially begins transporting the president next month.
The Boeing 747-8i luxury jet showcases a striking red, white, and navy blue color scheme, replacing the iconic robin's egg blue that has adorned the aircraft since George H.W. Bush's presidency, spanning nearly four decades.
The tail of the aircraft prominently displays a wavy version of the US national flag.
During a brief ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, Trump remarked, "The most significant change is the size; it's almost double the previous aircraft's size."
He added, "These are the new colors—red, white, and blue. While we appreciated the baby blue, it was time for a transformation... I prefer the colors of the American flag."
The US Air Force announced that the aircraft will soon undergo "commissioning flights," which serve as a final assessment before it can officially transport the president.
Frustrated by delays in Boeing's Air Force One replacement program and the aging US presidential fleet compared to newer foreign aircraft, Trump sought the Emir of Qatar's permission to use this nearly new 747.
"I asked the Emir if we could utilize the brand new 747," Trump stated, highlighting the aircraft's minimal flight hours.
"Typically, a standard president wouldn't pursue this. They would prefer to avoid aircraft. However, our nation deserves proper representation," he emphasized.
This Qatari jet will act as a temporary solution to transport the president until the new planes ordered from Boeing are delivered, which is anticipated by 2028.
The Air Force confirmed that any aircraft designated as Air Force One must adhere to strict security standards, and the Qatari plane has been modified with a focus on these essential capabilities.
Trump announced that the new Air Force One will perform a flyover during the July 4 celebrations at the National Mall, coinciding with America's 250th Independence Day.
He also plans to take the new jet to the NATO summit in Turkey next month.
Trump's return from the Group of 7 summit in France marked the final journey aboard the old Air Force One.
"We are proud to deliver the VC-25B Bridge aircraft to the President," stated Air Force Chief of Staff Gen Ken Wilsbach.
The Air Force previously indicated that security modifications to the jet would cost under USD 400 million.
The introduction of the Bridge aircraft is crucial to alleviate the strain on the aging VC-25A fleet, ensuring the continuity of presidential airlift operations until the long-term Boeing VC-25B is operational, as stated by the US Air Force.
