On Monday, President Donald Trump announced a pause in military operations against Iran, aiming to explore diplomatic avenues. He cautioned, however, that military action could be reinstated if negotiations do not yield results. In an interview with Axios, Trump revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding a potential agreement that could facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and advance talks concerning Iran's nuclear ambitions. The negotiations primarily involve Iran and Oman, with participation from Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, and U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Trump emphasized the seriousness of the talks, stating, "We are in very deep talks with Iran. If they don't work out, we will go back to very strong military action." When asked about the timeframe for diplomacy, he responded, "Not much time. Either it goes fast or not at all." He explained that the decision to halt military strikes was influenced by requests from mediating countries and regional allies, who urged him to allow for further negotiations. "All of the people that deal with Iran asked me: 'Don't fire,'" he noted, expressing his belief that Tehran is interested in reaching an agreement.

Trump elaborated on his rationale, stating, "Nothing gained, nothing lost." He also pointed out that following the military pause, oil prices decreased and stock markets improved. Reports indicate that Trump instructed U.S. forces to delay planned strikes on Iranian positions after consulting with senior military officials. Initially leaning towards military action, he shifted his stance on Thursday evening before finalizing the decision on Friday.

Sources revealed that negotiations between Oman and Iran have shown progress, although no formal agreement has been established yet. Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi confirmed he had discussions with officials from Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt, focusing on enhancing maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. One proposal under consideration involves Iran, Oman, and other regional nations collecting "reasonable service fees" for maritime security and environmental protection, drawing inspiration from the Strait of Malacca's model.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday, where he plans to discuss the implications of Iran's nuclear capabilities. Meanwhile, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Tehran rejected a U.S. proposal during recent talks in Islamabad, labeling it as containing "extreme demands." He noted that the Iranian delegation did not attempt to persuade the U.S. to continue negotiations, reflecting Iran's approach to diplomacy.

Gharibabadi also mentioned discussions regarding the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that Iran declined a proposal to keep a southern shipping route open during ongoing negotiations. He asserted that Iran's policy remains unchanged, regardless of the negotiation outcomes. Later on Monday, Trump reiterated his optimism regarding diplomatic efforts, stating, "I have a lot of patience" and expressing confidence in the progress of discussions with Iran.

Trump remarked, "We're having good talks," and indicated that there is a significant possibility of a breakthrough. He added that if negotiations fail, the U.S. would revert to its previous military stance. Despite tensions, he assured that the Strait of Hormuz remains secure, even as Iran has attempted to disrupt shipping activities in the area.
