Trump's Tariff Remarks on India

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that India has proposed a 'no tariff' agreement while defending his decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports.

In a phone interview on The Scott Jennings Radio Show, Trump asserted his expertise in tariffs, labeling India as the 'most tariffed nation' globally.

He stated, 'China imposes heavy tariffs on us, India does the same, and Brazil is no different. I have a better understanding of tariffs than anyone else. India has the highest tariffs in the world, and they have now offered to eliminate them. If I hadn't imposed tariffs, they wouldn't have made such an offer. Therefore, tariffs are necessary.'

Earlier this week, Trump described the trade relationship between the US and India as 'totally one-sided' and a 'disaster,' noting that India has now proposed to reduce its tariffs to zero, but he believes it is overdue.

'Many people don't realize that our trade with India is minimal, while they export a significant amount to us. They are our largest supplier, yet we sell them very little. This has been an imbalanced relationship for decades due to India's high tariffs, which are the highest of any country, hindering our businesses from entering their market,' he explained.

'This situation has been a complete disaster! Furthermore, India primarily sources its oil and military equipment from Russia, purchasing very little from the US. They should have reduced their tariffs long ago. These are just some facts for people to consider!' he concluded.
